lichen
2019

Site-specific, living installation on the grounds of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program.

Created with long strands of Usnea sp. lichen gathered from the Djerassi property, this work is sited in two carefully selected old oaks. The two lichen ropes are intended to be living artworks, made of material gathered from site, transformed, and returned to site. As the California weather shifts from rain to fog to drought, the ropes will come alive or go into dormancy just as the lichen do.
